“I am Mdm Chetana*, a proud mother of three boys, two of whom are enrolled in Epworth Literacy Centre.

Being a single parent of three children is challenging, especially when we face a lot of financial problems. I was worried that, due to my financial background, getting a place for them at Epworth Literacy Centre would be a problem. Two of my children, Vasant* and Kishor*, have learning difficulties and they needed literacy intervention. I knew how costly such interventions would be and I thought they were beyond my means. I had tried to seek help elsewhere, but I often received no reply. As time dragged on, my children suffered in their studies. As a parent, I couldn’t bear to see that happen.

After being referred to Epworth Community Services, my problems seemed to be a lot more manageable. I would like to thank the social workers at Epworth Community Services for their help in subsidising the fees for the literacy programme. Furthermore, they have helped me manage my finances better. With their help, I feel a little less burdened by my financial problems.

As a result of the financial assistance given by Epworth Community Services, my two children (Vasant & Kishor) are now enrolled in the centre’s Literacy Intervention Programme and have benefitted a lot from it. My youngest, Kishor, was diagnosed with Dyslexia. He had difficulties in spelling, reading and writing. He even had problems spelling his name or sequencing the letters A to Z and this had gone on since pre-school. However, within a year and a half of attending classes in MCYC, he has shown vast improvement. He is now able to spell, read and write basic words.

As for my eldest son, Vasant, he was diagnosed with Language Impairment. After attending the literacy programme in Epworth Literacy Centre, he is now able to read better and identify key points and words in reading comprehension passages. His grammar and vocabulary skills have also improved.

I would like to thank Teacher Jovian for guiding them. The staff members at Epworth Literacy Centre are also kind and understanding. I believe, with the help they’re receiving in Epworth Literacy Centre, my two kids will do well in their education.

I hope Epworth Community Services continues to provide such wonderful services to many in need out there.”
